The planning of healthcare buildings represents one of the most demanding tasks in architecture. It is crucial to translate medical processes, technical infrastructure, and hygienic requirements into a functional spatial structure that accommodates the needs of patients, staff, and visitors. These buildings serve equally as workplaces, treatment facilities, and communal spaces. The quality of the design is largely determined by clear organisation, which ensures short distances, unambiguous functional relationships, and good orientation. Furthermore, light, acoustics, materiality, and the connection to the external environment play a crucial role; these elements are understood not as additive design features, but as integral components of the functional concept.
Telluride Architektur develops these buildings based on an analysis of the respective process and operational requirements. The foundation is formed by functional workflows, usage contexts, and development scenarios. From these analyses, access, zoning, spatial relationships, and the overarching building structure are derived. Although the projects vary in scale and typology, they follow consistent planning principles. This includes the development of spaces from the perspective of different users, where orientation, clarity, and the quality of stay are as relevant as functional precision. Short distances and comprehensible circulation form the organisational backbone of the buildings.
Integral Planning Principles
An essential principle is the unity of building and open space, where daylight, materiality, and the connection to the outdoor area are understood as integral components of the spatial concept. Resource conservation and operational efficiency are also considered from the outset, by linking energy, space, and resource efficiency with operational and technical requirements. Another focus is on adaptability: floor plans and building structures are designed to be able to react to changing medical, technical, and organisational requirements.
The application of these principles is exemplified in several projects by Telluride Architektur. At the Heart Centre of the University Hospital Bonn, the functional networking of cardiology and cardiac surgery was central. By bringing together previously dispersed disciplines into a common structure, the spatial organisation could follow treatment processes and reduce distances and patient movements. The new building also establishes a clear urban landmark within the heterogeneous Venusberg campus. The architectural solution here directly resulted from the process logic of interdisciplinary medicine.
At Klinikum Landsberg, the combination of medical function, materiality, and connection to the open space is distinctive. The planned new functional building in the patient garden is largely defined by wood, both internally and externally. Warm colours, encircling balconies, and the connection to the green outdoor space contribute to a calm, homely atmosphere. The functional organisation remains precise: the technical infrastructure is bundled in the basement levels and directly connected to the operating areas on the ground floor. The planning combines a clearly structured operational organisation with a deliberately non-institutional spatial effect.
The Waldkliniken Eisenberg demonstrate the consistent implementation of a patient-centred approach in spatial design. In cooperation with the architect Matteo Thun, a building was created where stay, orientation, and service were treated as interconnected planning themes. Communal lounge and dining areas, patient rooms, and the internal routing are part of a continuous spatial dramaturgy. Materiality and atmosphere are defined by wood, glass, daylight, and the direct connection to the surrounding landscape. The circular building form illustrates how building typology, interior design, and operating model can be brought together to create a distinctive healthcare architecture.
For the planned Rehabilitation Centre Mölln, the large-scale building task is transformed into a small-scale, modular structure. Instead of a single, continuous large building, individual modules are created, grouped around a central marketplace to form a village-like overall figure. Therapy and examination areas are connected with lounge and meeting zones, while the outdoor spaces offer opportunities for rest, exercise, and rehabilitation sports. This typology creates differentiated degrees of public and private space and at the same time forms a flexible spatial basis for future changes in usage requirements.
